Known for years as the only creature that can survive a nuclear bomb (which was proven “Plausible” by the hit TV show Mythbusters), the Cockroach (or “Roach” for short) has an amazing adaptability and ability to survive. Cockroaches have long antennae, long legs tailored for running, and a flat extension of the upper body wall that conceals the head. Many species are able to fly as well, although the familiar household species typically do not fly. Roaches tend to be nocturnal and gravitate to dark, moist areas, or wherever food is stored. Disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses have been found in Cockroach bodies. Different forms of gastroenteritis (food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, etc.) appear to be the principal diseases they transmit. Cockroaches carry the disease-causing organisms on their legs and bodies, and these organisms are deposited on food and utensils as the cockroaches forage. Cockroach excrement and cast skins also contain a number of allergens, to which many people exhibit allergic responses, such as skin rashes, watery eyes, congestion of nasal passages, asthma, and sneezing. Cockroaches can propagate rapidly—one female with an egg sac may breed as many as one million little cockroaches in one year! Of the 3,500 known species, common species found in the Pacific Northwest include the German, Oriental, American, and Brown Banded Cockroaches.
